Leading European AI researchers cannot be reduced to a single ranking. This directory starts with the ELLIS board and the affiliations ELLIS publishes, then points to its wider members list for research beyond that selection.
ELLIS is the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems, a pan-European network focused on machine learning. Its homepage reports more than 2,300 members. Its 29 October 2026 announcement reports 49 units. These network figures describe its reach, not a ranking of researchers.
Last verifiedWhy the selection starts with the board
A board provides an explicit, public inclusion rule. It does not establish who is the best scientist, who has the most influential paper or who is available for a conference. Researchers outside the board may be leaders in their own fields.
The table covers the executive board and current board members. It excludes the separately listed board coordinator and alumni. This keeps governance roles and historical membership distinct.
ELLIS board, checked on 31 October 2026
Affiliations below follow the official board page. The order is alphabetical; it conveys no rank. ELLIS's “Fellow”, “Unit Director” and “Program Director” labels are network roles, rather than inferred university job titles.
| Researcher | Current board group | Affiliation published by ELLIS |
|---|---|---|
| Serge Belongie | Executive Board | University of Copenhagen (UCPH) |
| Nicolò Cesa-Bianchi | Board Members | University of Milan (UniMi) |
| Florence d'Alché-Buc | Board Members | Polytechnic Institute of Paris (Télécom Paris) |
| Samuel Kaski | Board Members | Aalto University; ELLIS Institute Finland; University of Manchester (UoM) |
| Danica Kragic | Board Members | KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) |
| Neil D. Lawrence | Board Members | University of Cambridge |
| Nuria Oliver | Executive Board | ELLIS Alicante Unit Foundation |
| Torsten Sattler | Executive Board | Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) |
| Oliver Stegle | Board Members | European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL); German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) |
These are nine entry points into a much wider field. The table records what ELLIS publishes about its board; it does not independently verify each person's employment contract or every affiliation.
How to go further than the board
Researchers, company leaders and product companies
A researcher can also found a company or hold an executive role. Check each role separately. The company leaders directory covers company positions; the European AI companies shortlist covers products and documented European operations.
For example, Mistral publishes Guillaume Lample's company role in the sources linked by the companies article. That fact alone does not put him on the ELLIS board. A keynote appearance similarly does not establish a current university affiliation.

Frequently asked questions
Who are the leading European AI researchers?
There is no single ranking used here. A documented starting point is the ELLIS board, including Serge Belongie, Nicolò Cesa-Bianchi, Florence d'Alché-Buc, Samuel Kaski, Danica Kragic, Neil D. Lawrence, Nuria Oliver, Torsten Sattler and Oliver Stegle. This is a governance-based selection, not a complete account of European AI research.
What is ELLIS?
ELLIS is the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems, a pan-European research network focused on machine learning. Its members directory and institutional sites provide routes into the research community; they are not a league table of scientists.
Does this list include company research leaders?
A person is included here only if the current ELLIS board page lists them. Founders and executives have a separate company leaders directory. A company title alone does not establish a research affiliation or a board seat.
